what's happening right now is harry reid and mitch mcconnell, the top democrat and republican in the senate are still negotiating their staffs at this hour. they are supposed to be working until about 3:00 this afternoon when the plan would be presented to both caucuses. as we understand what they are talking about is the bare minimum. basically the senate negotiating to extend those tax cuts for everybody making under $250,000 a year and do extend unemployment benefits also they're talking about trying to do something to stop the automatic spending cuts that go into effect but don't expect a deal on that. now, dan, if a deal can be reached today, the senate would begin looking at it, begin debating it and then you would see vote tomorrow in the senate and possibly a vote tomorrow in the house because as you know, if we get to tuesday without any of this happening, off the cliff. >> and, jon, you say off the cliff by tuesday, just two days left, how damaging would it be if we do indeed go off the cliff even if we bungee up a few days or weeks after. >> the impact on everybody's taxes

at some point take up some sort of measure that harry reid will have cobbled together hoping to get some republican support. but right now it is possible, of course, to resolve this. it's also possible according to a lot of sources that we're talking to that we do go over the cliff, but at this point the white house talking to senate democrats about what their proposal is that they'll be putting out here in the nex week. >> if there was some break through i'm assuming the president would cut his vacation short and go back to washington? is that what you understand? >> reporter: they haven't made it official, suzanne, but i think that is the expectation. talking with sources. it's not really a matter of if the president is going back to washington. it seems to be more a matter of when will he go back. so that hasn't been announced. i'm sure at some point they will make it official and that will be put in motion, but it's really hard to see a scenario where the senate is reconvenesing. all of this is sort of cruising to the fiscal cliff and the president would stay here in hawaii. >> brian

it's harry reid and the president that have yet to come up with something. if it was so easy, if they thought they had a solution to it, why didn't on friday they come to the table and actually pass something? the pressure is on them, what can they pass in the senate? >> harold, you know the politics of this but you also know the markets and how they've been reacting and wall street and corporate america more generally. is there new pessimism that we're, a, not going to get a deal and not solve the issue anyway? >> big disappointment. people outside of washington understand clearly. a couple hundred billion over ten years separating both sides. the question becomes can washington still govern itself? two, there's a realization we're in the middle of a small recovery. if we find ourselves not able to resolve this moment, it retards and slows and undermines what we see ourselves doing going forward. finally, for the life of me as someone who sfrd there, it was so distressful to watch both sides yell at each other. i feel sorry for speaker boehner. i've seen so
